Introduction
Ozone is formed naturally in the atmosphere, as a colorless gas having a very pungent odor. Ozone is an unstable gas that decomposes readily into molecular oxygen. Ozone is the most powerful and rapid acting oxidizer produced, and will oxidize all bacteria, endotoxins, mold and yeast spores, organic material and viruses
The conversion of oxygen into ozone occurs with the use of ambient air and energy. This process is carried out by an electric
|
discharge field. Nitrogen is stripped from ambient air to concentrate the oxygen content and Oxygen is passed through a high voltage or high frequency electrical field. A percentage of the oxygen are converted to ozone.
Ozone kills a percentage of invasive marine species by direct contact. The remainder of the invasive marine species are killed when the ozone interacts with other chemicals that naturally occur in sea water to create hypobromous acid. This kills the remaining invasive marine species.
Both ozone and the hypobromous acid then disintegrate so there will be no damage to the receiving water into which the treated water is discharged. Only trace amounts of the bromine compounds remain in the treated water. Those trace amounts enable the ship's captain to prove to the port authority that the ballast has been properly treated. |
| System Description |
 |
Ozone system produces a low concentration of Active Substances ozone treatment by injecting ozone into the ship's ballast water. By injecting ozone into the sea water invasive marine species are killed
Ozone system is composed of two integrated module which consist of ozone producing part and injection part. So that the system as modularized can be installed in the manner of plug and play.
Ozone will be injected into seawater at outlet of ballast water pumps in engine room and the system can be installed onboard all type of vessels. Ambient ozone will be converted back to oxygen prior to release into the environment. |
 |
Safety, Health and Environment
The length of the voyage will ensure any toxicity remaining from the initial ozone dosage will be disapated prior to discharge. Dosage will be controlled and toxicity can be measured prior to discharge. This will ensure that toxicity of discharged water will be within acceptable levels.
All human (crew) exposure to ozone will be monitored. In the event ambient ozone levels rise to unhealthy levels (0.1 ppm) the ozone generator will be programmed to stop ozone production. Alarms will sound if this condition is present.
|
| As dissolved ozone in seawater has only a 5 second half-life, the ozone will have no harmful corrosive effects to the ship or to the anti corrosion devices on the ship. The ozone will have no effect to soil or sediment because it will not come into contact with soil or sediment in or treatment process. |
